What is Organic Cotton?

Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment... that’s right, it’s SUSTAINABLE!  Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and from seeds which have not been genetically modified and the production process replenishes and maintains soil fertility.

 

Why is Organic Cotton better for the Planet, Farmers and Local Communities? 

Healthier Soil - Organic farmers use natural methods like composting to create healthy soil. Healthy soil acts like a sponge, soaking up water during floods and holding it for longer during droughts. Mother nature at her finest.

Combats Climate Change - Healthy soil also stores carbon and helps to combat climate change. Organic cotton emits up to 46% less greenhouse gas than non-organic.

No Polluting Pesticides - Hazardous synthetic pesticides are banned in organic farming, this means that the health of workers improves dramatically, communities can live in relative health with access to clean water and food supplies, and the land has a longer lifespan because it is not being damaged by chemicals.

Saves Water - Over one fifth of water used to grow non-organic cotton is used to dilute hazardous pesticides to ‘safe’ levels when entering waterways. So Organic cotton farming doesn’t just keep rivers, lakes and drinking water clean, it saves precious water too!

Natural Watering - Most organic cotton is grown in rain-fed areas, this mean farmers rely on rain to water their cotton, instead of having to extract water from the ground which can put pressure on water supplies in local communities.

Helping Farmers Feed Their Families - Organic farmers always grow other crops alongside their cotton. These crops can provide farming families and their communities with a more stable, accessible, abundant and diverse food supply and another source of income.

 

What is GOTS?

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), was developed by leading standard setters to define world-wide recognised requirements for organic textiles. They ensure that both environmental and social standards, such as safe and hygienic working conditions, no workplace discrimination and fair pay rates, are respected. They have been working to make sure organic textiles also enhance (or at least do not harm) people’s lives.
