Meet Kia D. Goosby

Kia D. Goosby is the womenswear fashion market editor at Vanity Fair. She is in the know for all things fashion, trends, R&B music and 90’s culture. She exudes a vibrant energy which is portrayed in her work and exciting content. Kia lives in New York but was born in Atlanta which she holds very close to her heart. We loved getting an insight into Kia’s life, thoughts and inspirations and personal style!

Talk to us about your role as a market editor - what inspires you? How do you go about noticing a trend? What excites you about what you're seeing at the moment?

Being a market editor has been a great experience. I am forever inspired by the countless collections that designers continue to produce. When it comes to trends, we all know that things come and go and many current trends we’re seeing today aren’t really new. You see the similarities across collections and see how designers interpret certain styles of the moment and from there, a trend is born. As a market editor, my work allows me to interact with people from all over the world and I am forever grateful and excited about being able to have this opportunity. It’s always been the one part of my job that truly makes it all worthwhile.

Atlanta vs New York - what 'wins' and a short 'why'? Food, Galleries, Parks, Shops...

Going to plead the 5th on this question :) — because you can’t compare Atlanta to New York City. In my opinion one city is not greater than the other. Atlanta will always have my heart because it is my birthplace and where I grew up; there are so many things I love about the city of Atlanta (and the metro area). New York is where I choose to live because of my career and it has definitely been a great place to be with all of the amazing things that are happening here. However, I will say this — there is truly amazing food in Atlanta, and whenever I go home it is extremely hard trying to hit up all of my favorite places at once.

Where is the next place you'd like to visit?

Marrakech, Morocco. I am truly dying to go and experience all that it has to offer because I know the pictures don’t do it justice.

Who or what inspires your own style?

I will forever be inspired by the style of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I know that it covers a lot of territory, but I tend to seek inspiration from the past as there are so many icons whose style I love, it's so hard to name just one.

What do you think is going to stick around when it comes to trends? And what is going to go soon...

It seems like the idea of the ease of dressing with comfort core will be around for a while. We are living through a pandemic and it has affected us in more ways than one. I also think that concept of nostalgic dressing seems to be sticking around for a while. Everything from the 90s and early 2000s is all over the streets and runways. But it's hard to say what's going to go. The moment you say something is on its way out, someone will breathe new life in it again.

How do you unwind when not making/creating/writing?

I’m an only child and I never thought I would appreciate the beauty of being able to be alone and just be still. I enjoy being around people, spending time with family and friends (always), but I do enjoy my alone time just as much. I have found comfort in getting lost in a great book or watching a tv series, documentary, or a throwback film.

What is one of your favourite recipes?

My grandmother used to make a dish called Chicken Sidney. Please don’t ask me why she called it that! But she would sauté chicken in a skillet and cook the rice in the same pot. Then she would transfer it to a casserole dish and add cooked black beans with green chiles and then bake in the oven for a few minutes. It’s truly one of the easiest and most delicious meals.
